Take a good look at this picture and remember it.
I’ve always said, and I think so far I have followed through with the promise, that this would be a warts and all look at my working through this project.
AND BOY DID I F**K UP!
But I don’t want to ruin the surprise, so we’ll go through my progress in order!
A lot of the work that I have been doing has been final spot filling. Using an Evercoat glazing putty to get out final scratches, etc. I recently got a present that works really well for this type of thing, a MYCHANIC rolling work seat, that comes with drawers, tool holders, and foldable magnetic trays. This thing is awesome!
Here are some more shots of the putty work.
As soon as I smoothed out the body, I was ready to add in the “movie accurate” dents. I used a variety of tools and it was really a fun part of this project!
I also managed to score for decent vintage ’70s Budweiser cans.
And yes, you guessed it. They will be smashed and displayed on the dash and package shelf!
So, by the end of this weekend I was really feeling good about my progress, and I decided to finish priming so I can do a final sand.
Deciding to let the car cure while I leave for a vacation I decide to clean up the garage and get everything ready for my return.
WELL, here comes the BOO-BOO.
I brush against the car and find a big scratch where primer was, thinking this was odd, since the primer was dry to the touch, I scraped my finger nail against the panel, and sure enough, I was able to remove the primer with my nail. WTF?
Well, earlier in the build I bought a variety of rust coatings for different stages of my project from Eastwood. After removing all of the rust, I grabbed a can of starting shooting. Well, I failed to realized that the one I grabbed was the Heavy-Duty Anti-Rust. This is NOT MEANT TO BE PAINTED OVER!!!!
It never fully dries, and is meant for the underside and inside of rocker panels, frames, etc.
I pulled out a scraper and within a few minutes I was able to do this…
So instead of coming home and painting the car in a week, I will be coming home to remove all of that crap and clean up the car, scuff and shoot primer again.
Will it delay me? Absolutely, but in the end I am happy that I caught it now as opposed to AFTER I PAINTED!!!
UGH!!
