Stanchions Build – Chicago Bluesmobile Style!

Stanchions are really useful to have at conventions and car shows.  Most any event in fact where the car is stationary.

The only problem is though, The Bluesmobile doesn’t quite fit in with the velvet rope crowd if you know what I mean.

So the other day I was brainstorming, how can I provide the protection the car needs, while not being too fancy.

Then the light bulb went off!!

Police Barriers!

I absolutely love the scene towards the end of the movie, where Chicago Police officers set up a bunch of police barriers with lights and flares and their cars, only to have the Blues Brothers blow right through it all!

Those would make perfect stanchions!!!

I found the bases, which wouldn’t be to difficult to build, but hey if you don’t have to make them from scratch, all the better!

Next I went to my local home improvement store and got a long section of 1×8 pine.  It was real important to me that I could get this to the events easily (in my trunk), so I proceeded to cut it in half.

Then I hinged one side and slide locks on the other side to keep it secured when in place.

A few coats of Rustoleum Brilliant Blue later and I have a reasonable facsimile of a Chicago Police barricade.

But to give it that oh so perfect look, I created stencils, but instead of Chicago Police Department, I referenced the website!

Last but not least I added the flashing lights.

And here they are at the first event!

I plan on making a few more sets of these in order to fill up the spaces nicer!

Hope you enjoyed reading about my little build project!

  1. My friend, that is AWESOME!!!! You amaze even ME with your creativity!!! I used to come up with all kinds of small props and “stuff” for our car shows and band events, but never once even thought of doing the police barricades!!! You rock, man!!!

    1. Thanks John! I appreciate the kind words! I just couldn’t stand the thought the Bluesmobile behind velvet ropes!!!
