Everything You Wanted To Know About Floral Foam, But Were Afraid To Ask*

*And what the hell does floral foam have to do with the Bluesmobile????

Floral foam.  It’s useful for arranging flowers, hence “floral” in the title. It’s also very handy to make different elevations of scenery when putting up your Christmas Village.

While brainstorming ideas with some of my good friends that are part of the 501st Midwest Garrison, https://www.midwestgarrison.com/ (Hi Joey! Hi Steve!), it turns out that floral foam is also most excellent for fabrication work!

As I have previously mentioned, I am planning on shaping the front of the fenders where they meet the header panel in fiberglass.  What I didn’t want to do was spend a lot of time making plugs, and fiberglass molds of those plugs, then finally fiberglass parts.

While there are a lot of fans out there making duplicate Bluesmobiles, I’m not sure there  is a market in mass producing these, so I am looking to fiberglass over the form I make.  Hopefully this will help others when trying to find an economical way of replicating ’74 fenders without having to find complete OEM fenders or welding.

That’s where floral foam comes into play.  This material is really easy to work with.  Excellent shaping capabilities, easy to sand in order to get the finer details, and best of all you can slop fiberglass resin right on top of it and it will not melt!!! That would be key to have nice fiberglass end caps.
